Runescape Mini Game Guide

Barbarian Assault Guide for Advanced Adventurers

First of all, it not strictly a guide, but rather my tips/tricks/experiences related to this minigame. I hope you'll find it useful.

General Section

1. Rule #1.
If you tend to get frustrated when people on your team perform poorly or behave noobish, DON'T PLAY THIS MINIGAME. Period.

I can promise you, that you will get in situations when your teammates won't be cooperating and your effort will be wasted. Think about it. Take it easy. Try to help your teammates and don't get into 'insulting' mode.

2. Don't try to tackle the Queen, until you gain at least lvl 2 in your primary skill. I would recommend trying every role at least a few times before you go for the Queen. It will give you understanding of the way your teammates are doing their jobs and how you can contribute better to the whole enterprise.

3. What to bring with you?
My usual set (for any role):
-- Whip and dragon dagger (if you don't have whip tale drag long/scimmy, or don't be a fighter). DON'T use magic or range when you are a fighter - both are very inefficient out there. Melee and melee.
-- Granite/rune body
-- Granite/rune legs
-- Best gloves you have (I use spiked black dragon vambraces)
-- Best boots you have (I use adamant)
-- Gnomes amulet (if you have one, otherwise power ammy)
-- NO CAPE (the slot will be taken)
-- Granite/rune shield
-- Warrior/Rune helm
Overall idea is to have as much defense against melee/range as you can. Don't bother with defense against magic.
-- I usually take 1 def, 1 super att and 1 super str potions. I use att/str potions when doing fighter role on waves 8-10. I use def potions on any role when dealing with Queen.

4. Avoid using the 'free' room (the one without a number). Better go to the room #1 and find yourself a team. The problem with 'free' room and that the chance of getting into incompetent team is very high.

Role by role

Fighter

Easiest role. However you better have combat 80+ for this role. Especially on 8-10 waves. Tips:

-- As soon as the game starts run forward (preferably to the left top corner), while running tell style to the collector and select correct combat mode. Drink your potions (if you have any). Start killing Penance Rangers. The idea is to do most of the killing away from the right side of the field, as it is where defender will be working on Penance Runners. You want to make it easier for defender, so don't bring monsters over there.

-- Turn OFF auto-retaliate. It goes for every role INCLUDING FIGHTER. You want to kill monsters you choose and when you choose, not vice versa.

-- If the collector didn't tell you the style - don't fight. Run aside (in extreme cases to the cannon) and wait till he/she remembers. Ask him/her to tell you the style. You don't want to get penalty points by using wrong style.

-- When the style changes, instantly click away from the monster, so you don't get penalty points. Next tell the collector new style. After that change your own combat style and back to the fight! Remember this sequence: first you tell collector, then resume the battle!

-- When you are done with Penance Rangers and Fighters, go and shoot the cannon.

-- In general, try to kill Penance Rangers first, so they would not be able to shoot into the safe areas at the cannons.

-- DON'T DIE. If you are low on HP, run to the cannon. Sometime healers are not able to heal you as fast as needed. If you see that healers can't manage it, move to the healer pit and fight there. Let them avoid running as much. However if you are OK on hp, don't linger close to the healer pit - let it be monsters free zone.

Collector

Second easy role. You can have almost any combat level (in reasonable range, 50+) to do it.

-- Guess what is you main function? Collect eggs? Wrong! Your main function is to tell the fighter correct style as soon as possible! Don't forget it. Whatever you do, the instant style changes - tell new style to the fighter!

-- Don't try to collect eggs, when you don't know which color. Don't get penalties and don't force healers to spend their time on you. If the fighter forgot to tell you, ask him and wait.

-- Always load the east cannon with your eggs, as it is where Penance Runners go.

-- If you see that defense is having troubles catching Penance Runners, you can shoot the cannon for a while and kill a few Runners. Then resume your eggs collecting.

-- In general try to collect as many eggs as you can, even at the end of the game when there is no real need. You get points for all eggs you collected.

-- Don't get into heavy fighting zone if you can avoid it. You don't really have to take any damage. However if you have high defense (70+), you may intentionally stay there and let Penance Rangers shoot at you - you'll help the fighter a bit by doing it.

-- DON'T DIE. It is extremely stupid to die while being a collector. If you are low on HP, go to the cannon and wait for healer.

Healer

Hate this job :-) Run, run, run.
High defense is a plus for this role.

-- This is the only role, where you can be excused for not telling correct style in time. Healers are often so busy healing other people, so they tend to forget. However, every time you run to the healer pit - tell the style to defender. Try to remember: defender's role is the hardest one and he/she will appreciate if you make it a bit easier.

-- As soon as the game starts, tell the style to defender (IT IS CRUCIAL - skilled defender will get two Penance Runners in the first minute if you do just that!). Next pick up your supplies and fill the phial. Next go and poison ALL Penance Healers as soon as you can. Try to avoid healing until you done with this task. Once you poisoned them, they will die eventually, so you can concentrate on healing.

-- Your healing priorities
a) Fighter (just keep him alive, no matter what)
b) Collector
c) Defender
d) Other healer
Collector and Defender are responsible for their HP. They should come to you or stay in safe zone if they are in trouble. But you are responsible for the fighter health.

-- At the end of the game, heal everybody - you'll get more points.

-- If the team is high level and no one needs healing, go shoot the cannon and kill some Runners (assuming all Penance Healers are poisoned already).

Defender

The hardest role. You can have almost any combat level (in reasonable range, 50+) to do it.

-- First minute is crucial for your success. As soon as the game starts, get your supplies, TELL STYLE TO THE HEALER, remind healer to tell you style and run toward the east trap. Go north-west from the trap and put down a few baits (I put 2 there and 1 on the trap itself). Don't wait and go pick up a hammer and 2 logs. Go back to the trap and fix it (if you did it right, you'll get your prey already). Put bait on the trap and get another Runner in, fix it and run for the next set of logs. The objective is to get 2-3 Penance Runners right at the starts.

-- Don't put down any bait if you don't know whether it is good or not. You don't want to get penalties.

-- Operate around the east trap

-- If the healer does not tell you style, be patient - he/she might be extremely busy. It happens often. Go to the healer and ask/remind him/her.

-- Don't bother with building walls.

-- At the end if people are shooting cannon at your Penance Runners, just drop correct food close to the cannon. You don't have to catch them (Runners), just don't let them wander away.

-- DON'T DIE. Same as for collector. Run to the safe spot or healer pit if you are in trouble. The healer should NOT be responsible for looking for you all over the field.

Cannon

-- Mostly operated by the fighter. But other players may do this as well from time to time.

-- When using cannon always kill Runners first.

-- Avoid shooting blue eggs. They stun monsters and people can't hit/poison them when it happens.

Queen

Generic tips

-- You MUST have two healers on the team. At least one of them should be 3+.

-- Do you job quickly and stay at the healer pit after that. Healers should be able to heal you fast

-- Healers and Defender should clean their inventories from food when Queen arrives and their job is done.

-- When dealing with eggs, do it in bulk. Collector should collect 8 eggs and give them to one of the healers, and so on. No individual eggs floating around!

-- Don't bother killing the spawn.

-- At the end if you are high def (75+) and Queen is preventing your teammates from firing the cannon, go and run beneath the Queen - she will turn around and your teammates will shoot.

-- Know what you should do with the eggs BEFORE you go in.

There are a few changes in the strategies for the roles.

Defender

-- Don't worry about wrong food. No penalties.

-- This time Runners will not go through but will stick at the south wall. You should come there and lure them out.

-- You gotta do your job quickly.

Healer

-- There will be two of you, so make sure defender knows the correct style/food. No excuses this time

-- It is even more important to poison all Penance Healers at the beginning. You have to finish them quickly. Don't worry about using wrong food.

-- Heal each other.

Collector

-- Not much use for normal eggs. Just tell style to the fighter and stay out of trouble.

-- Don't die, when collecting yellow eggs.

Fighter

-- Finish the monsters and stay at the healer pit after that (until it is time to kill the Queen).
